When I first began running, I preferred to run solo. I didn't want to burden anyone with having to slow down for my sake nor did I want to put any pressure on myself to have to run faster than desired. Hello! As runners of all levels, we all started with the "I SUCK" stage and slowly just got better and better with each and every run. Once I became a member of local running groups, such as Moms Run This Town, Savannah Striders, Team In Training, and Fleet Feet's CREW, I broke out of that self-conscious shell and ventured into facing one of my biggest fears - running with a group. What a humongous difference it has made in my self confidence, speed, strength, and morale!
Having a run crew, fit squad, or whatever you want to call it, makes you more accountable and determined. Your run friends are there for you to help push the pace when needed; be reassuring when you're not feeling up to par; and ultimately are your #1 fans and motivators. It's a symbiotic relationship that is nurtured through mutual goals of wanting to improve performance.
I am so grateful for my run friends and look forward to our training runs where anything's up for discussion whether it's our goals for upcoming races to plans we have for the weekend with family and friends.
Training for a race just wouldn't be fun without having friends alongside of you sharing in the journey!
